Match Report - Boots Ladies

Editor's Note: The moral of this report is "beware of what you wish for ... because you just might get it"

Before we proceed to the match report, it's been brought to the attention of your correspondent that last week's round-up focused rather too much on one or two members of the side and neglected a couple of excellent performances from other players. So to that end, I would like to dedicate the following apology to Trish - and to do it through the medium of rhyming verse.

Oh how we love you, Trisha dear
Your runs they are so fine
How could we forget to mention
Last week's score of thirty nine?

You struck the ball with power so fierce
Controlled by inner rage
We watched in awe as your score increased
To almost match your age

You scorched the earth as you ran
And struck each base in turn
Showing the kids half your years
They've still so much to learn

So treasure your triumph
But beware my dear - don't whine
However much you doth protest
The last word will still be mine ...

There. That should do it.

Onto the game with Boots Ladies, and what a close-fought contest! The Tottington girls ultimately triumphed through nerve and no little skill, and there was a fine performance with the bat from Suzanne Thompson, whose 13 in trying circumstances was worth many more in the match context. Sadly the same can't be said of skipper Michelle, who obviously took heed from last week's comments and finally reached fifty ... well, she did if you add last week's 49 to her entire two innings output in this game. Congratulations to Jane who belied her advancing years by managing to make it all the way round the bases this week. In recognition of her fine achievement se has been awarded a key to the pavilion. The delighted Doodson commented: "It's like being 21 again". What, with rationing and the invasion of Poland?

There was also a fine individual bowling performance from Vicky "Mars Bar Award" Turner, who is immune to any sort of criticism or teasing as she scares the life out of me. Michelle sang the praises of her charges for a fine second innings fielding performance, turning a first innings deficit of 12 round to triumph by 20 - well done girls! 2 wins from 3 now, and a charge up the league is on! Thanks also to Mary for stepping in when the referee didn't show. There was a post-match ride for Kate "Not from Buxton" Luxton. On a sheet of plastic. Being towed by Kieran. Sadly your writer missed this as he was summoned away to Greenmount ... grrr.
