MARSHY SPEARHEADS 9 WICKET ROMP

On what may well have been the nicest day ever recorded at Springhead, the firsts got back to winning ways with a straightforward 9 wicket win against a depleted home side. Having won the toss, Nelly B chose to bowl on what soon turned into a bit of a minefield. Marshy and Doc P got into the game early, although the openers battled gamely at the start. Doc produced a couple of pearlers to bowl two out, and it basically fell on Tris De Havillan to hold the Springhead innings together; he showed some touches of class and launched Marshy for two big sixes, but once the big fella had produced an edge through to stand-in keeper Kieran, that was pretty much that.

Springhead's young lad down the order showed some skill and no shortage of bottle on a wicket that was starting to jag about alarmingly, and it ultimately fell to Russ and Marshy to clean up the tail. The final bowling figures were fairly impressive (Marshy 6-53, Paul 2-20, Russ 2-25) and the innings closed on 112. Oh and Kieran took a stumping, which he hasn't yet shut up about :)

Thoughts that this might prove one of those iffy targets were soon dispelled. Despite a lively opening burst from Tris, Kieran produced a couple of lusty hits to get us going, and with Duncan showing his usual stickability and some flourishing cover drives at the other end, we soon motored to 40. The CDO fell to an atypical slashing wide shot, but that just brought an aggressive Russ to the crease. The pair soon took the game away from Springhead, and it was left to Russ to hit ahuge six over cover to end the game with 23 overs to spare. Credit to Tris in particular for not giving up with the ball, but Russ (44 no) and Duncan (43 no) batted really well on a dubious wicket.

Overall a great result in a match played in very good spirit!
