SEASON STARTS WITH MIXED FORTUNES

The opening weekend of the 2014 season began with our sides experiencing mixed fortunes. Under new skipper Marshy the 1sts unfortunately failed to live up to pre-season promise as old rivals Rochdale Catholic Club knocked them over for 78, with the perennial Mo taking 7-26. The scoreline could have been much worse but for Big Bird who managed 45 not out to give the scoreline some semblance of respectability. The Catholics victory was assured thanks to a brisk unbeaten 51 from Dan Mulkeen Jnr. The boys will be looking to bounce back with a tricky trip to the returning Springhead next weekend.

Better news for the 2nds as Watty's men got off to a great start with a big victory against Darcy Lever. The Johns rattled up 192-7 in their overs, thanks to good knocks from several of the side including young Ste Brooks, Sail and John Downey, and then managed to roll over the home side for 148, with contributions all round.

Our women's team had the pick of the results with a comprehensive 7 wicket win at Ben Rhydding CC. Having won the toss, the girls elected to bowl first and restricted the home side to just 93 all out in 32.1 overs. The Ben Rydding total included a rather startling 31 wides - clearly some tough umpiring there! Bowling honours were taken by Katie Haszeldine who took 3-15 in her four overs, while the remaining wickets were shared round. Totts knocked off the runs in just 21 overs, with Jen Laycock striking 39 not out to lead the side to a strong win. You can follow the women's progress in the catchily named Northern Women's Leagues Yorkshire Women's Regional League Division 1 on the Northern Women's League website and of course on our very own club website too.
